White & Nerdy

A coworker sent me a link to a YouTube video for the new Weird Al song "White & Nerdy". Pretty funny and a bit of a headsticker...even if parts of it strike pretty close to home for me! It's off his new album Straight Outta Lynwood, released earlier this week (and currently on its way to me from amazon.com..)

I had a 'white & nerdy' moment yesterday, actually. One of the big news stories for yesterday was the hospitalization of notorious NFL player Terrell Owens for drug overdose, and whether or not it was intentional and such. My DH is out of town on business, and since I knew he didn't have Internet access at work there, I mentioned it to him last night.

My DH had to laugh. He's currently in Dallas (where T.O. plays), and this story was all over the airwaves. But it honestly did not occur to me that he might have heard on the radio or TV about it, because I get practically all my news on the Internet.

Talk about nerdy...

Thrill rides?

Driving in torrential rain - NOT my idea of fun.

The void in my attic...

At the moment, I'm convinced there's a dimensional void in my attic.

I could have sworn that *somewhere* is a box of Dragon Magazines, ranging from probably #80ish to about #240ish. I found another box of Dragons, from #250 on up, and some Dungeon magazines, but not the older ones.

And in the process of lugging all my AD&D 2nd edition stuff out of the attic, we seem to have lost the Elves, Dwarves, and Paladins handbooks. DH first noticed this when he was wanting to make up a Dwarf NPC, and in the process, discovered some other notable absences.

So after going through every single box in my attic, and every conceivable location down here (and some inconceivable ones as well), we have finally admitted that the rulebooks may indeed be gone.

Enter eBay, the other end of the black hole that begins with sock-eating dryers. A quick buy-it-now acquired all three of the missing rulebooks.

Which, of course, means that the wayward rascals will turn up any time now...

All along the watchtower

...of Amon Sûl, that is.

I reached a milestone on the Walk to Rivendell this evening, having (after a year!) finally made it to Weathertop!

I don't have a One Ring, so hopefully no Nazgûl will disturb my sleep!

Life comes at you fast...

As of around 4:30 this afternoon, I'm now a grandma! Well, a step-grandma, technically, but still...

DGS came in at just over 7lb in a fairly easy birth. DsD was only in labor about 7 hours, and delivered a mere 5 minutes after getting an epidural. DGS is healthy, with all appropriate appendages and such. And he looks a lot like Bilbo Baggins from the animated Hobbit.

All this time, though, and I never thought about what DGS should call me - since he has both biological grandmas down here as well, I need something a little different. I'm open to suggestions :)

Quote to ponder...

I came across the following quote last night, and it struck a chord with me:
"To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly broken....
....The only place outside Heaven where you can be safe from all the dangers and perturbations of love is Hell."
- C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

There was once a time when I would have liked to have been like the rock mentioned in the Simon and Garfunkel song "I Am a Rock". Perhaps fortunately, I never quite succeeded in that, and looking back I think my life would be much poorer if I had.

Yes, an island never cries, but neither does it smile.

Good Eats

Lately DH and I have taken to watching Good Eats on Food Network. Alton Brown is fun to watch, and many of his recipes look rather appetizing. So much so that #92 on my 101 Things list was to make something seen on Good Eats.

I can now mark #92 as done. I made Curried Split Pea Soup, with yellow split peas, and I think it turned out rather well. Since it was pureed (which admittedly was the not-fun part, putting it in a blender) it's not chunky and thick like one normally thinks of split-pea soup. But my family survived, and didn't veto my making it again, so I think I was successful.

Diplomacy...

DD and I went for haircuts today, and as I picked her up this evening, the following exchange took place:
Yours truly: We need to get your bangs trimmed tonight.
DD: Can we go to a professional? Cuz I'm not saying you're worse. You're just not as good.

Off the hook, so to speak...

Today was my stepdaughter's baby shower, and now that I'm back I can finally show off the baby gift I made for my impending grandson.

The pattern is from the Leisure Arts Our Best Baby Afghans book, and the yarns I used were a generic aqua I've had for a long time, and Wintuk "Summer Breeze" Ombre. I think it turned out pretty well, and DsD seemed to really like it.

I actually finished this almost two weeks ago, but couldn't show it off yet because DsD occasionally reads my blog and I didn't want to spoil the surprise.

It also certainly kept my fingers nimble, switching between the size K crochet hook I used for this, and the #8 steel hook I'm using for DD's veil!
