Well, after last week's rejoicing, my Lightning are down 2 games to the Capitals - not the outcome I was most hoping for. Still, it's playoff hockey and generally a good show.
What I've been reading... I didn't read at all for pleasure last week, so I'm still on page 491 of Father Brown.
What I've been stitching... I did do a fair bit of stitching. The camel is done except for some of the metallics, and I'm working on the ground. I should come close to finishing it by next update.
Fumbling toward fitness I made it by Curves 4 times last week, and we'll just not talk about treadmill this week. Duolingo and Lumosity streaks are still going strong, at least.
One Little Victory It was actually a very good week. DD came over Tuesday with her BF and little dog, and we had a great dinner. DsS also joined us, and I saw DsD and her boys yesterday, so I've seen all of my children in person over the past week. DH also took me to a nice steakhouse on Saturday night, so it was a wonderful Mother's Day week.

Monday miscellany - 23April18
We've been getting some much-needed rain the past few days. I'm very glad for it now, though I suspect that as usual I will be grousing about it during the peak of tropical storm season!
What I've been reading... I'm on page 429 of Chesterton's Father Brown stories. That's only modest progress since last week, but it is at least a small visit. I also watched one of the BBC Father Brown stories on our local PBS affiliate, and have subsequently set my DVR to capture another.
What I've been stitching... I have the whole front half of a camel for my last Nativity panel now - it is working up fairly quickly, and I'll be starting the back half tonight.
Fumbling toward fitness... I made it by Curves every weekday again, and the habit is becoming easier to maintain. I'm also continuing my Lumosity and Duolingo streaks. I did do a little better with treadmill, clocking just over 5 miles. I decided drastic measures were in order and asked my daughter to nag me about treadmill as well. Since obviously it's worked quite well with motivating me to get by Curves!
One Little Victory It's playoff hockey time, and the Tampa Bay Lightning have advanced to the second round. Go Bolts!

Weekend wrapup
DD's big day went rather well! She was very excited, and she looked very lovely in the handmade dress and veil.
One of the gifts we gave her was a rosary, handmade by the talented Karin - about the only way this could have been more handmade was for the silver to be cast! This picture isn't the greatest - the beads are a frosted white.
In other news, one more of my PIFs has made it to its new owner, Allie.
Judging from the comments on my last post, there is interest in my releasing the designs for these. Once my remaining PIFs have arrived at their new homes, I'll put those up.
My Tampa Bay Lightning got eliminated from the NHL playoffs, which is disappointing. But I suppose considering that the one time the Lightning won the Stanley Cup, we had a horrendous hurricane season, perhaps that's for the best.

Cup thoughts...
Game 7 was last night, and while the team I was hoping would win didn't prevail, it was still a good game, and a good series. Congratulations to the Hurricanes on a well-played series, and their first Stanley Cup! I guess now we'll get to see if DD's "Hurricane Cup == No Florida hurricanes" theory has any merit.
Some random notes:
It was a very physical series, but for the most part pretty clean. There were very few on-ice brawls, which in such a hotly-contested series seems a little unusual. But in a good way.
I was very impressed with the effort put forth by both teams. Edmonton played very well, especially in games 5 and 6. And to force a game 7 after losing their starting goalie in game 1 required a lot of heart, and a lot of teamwork. And I think if the home ice situation had been reversed, the series would have gone to the Oilers.
On the home front, I'm rather impressed with DD. She decided to cheer on the Hurricanes once she learned of their existence during the Conference Finals...despite the fact that the rest of the family was cheering on the Sabres in that series, and the Oilers in this one. I'm proud of my budding Caniac for sticking with her choice. And who knows, maybe the 'Canes Cup will make her into more of a hockey fan!
I wish I could ice skate like the players. They make it look so easy...
Just once in my life, I want to see and touch the Stanley Cup.
Now begins (for me, anyway) the long TV sports drought. I'm not interested in baseball or tennis or golf. It's a long wait until college football season!

Just an update...
Taking a lead from Christine, it's probably time for me to offer proof that I'm doing more than just sitting around watching playoff hockey.
The first update is to DD's First Communion veil, done with size 30 thread and a #8 steel crochet hook. Hockey has been good for this - I generally average a square a game, sometimes two. I've discovered that my aging fingers can't really support so fine a work for more than two motifs at a time, alas.
The other is to a project I've been keeping in my purse to work on when I have a few spare moments - Assisi Sampler. I've decided I like having something small and portable on the go - it fills minutes that would be otherwise wasted.
In other hobby news, I'm about 2/3 of the way through Sharon Kay Penman's The Sunne in Splendour, a historical fiction novel about the life of Richard III. This is one of my all-time favorite books, and with a trip to Yorkshire coming later this month, I figured now would be a good time for a reread.
But I won't be reading during tonight's game. I'm hoping that now the Oilers are back in Edmonton, that they can win tonight and force a Game 7!

Quest for the Holy Grail
To some, this brings to mind a sacred vessel and virtuous knights. To others, the crackpot theories espoused in a recent popular book and film. To still others, visions of empty halves of coconut and unladen swallows.
But right now, the Holy Grail is a yard tall and weighs about 35 pounds, and has been spotted in North Carolina. And on a wet day in Raleigh, the quest may end tonight for the Carolina Hurricanes.
However, I'm pulling for the Oilers, because I don't want the season to be over yet. It's been a great series so far, and I want a game 7!
Sometime in my life, I would love to see the Stanley Cup in person, to be close enough to touch the ultimate goal of many a hockey player.
I wonder how many people in Raleigh are wishing the same thing right now....

Stanley the Storm Magnet?
Last night DD watched the Buffalo Sabres-Carolina Hurricanes game with me. I was pulling for the Sabres, but DD decided she wanted the Hurricanes to win.
Why? Because, to her thinking, if the Hurricanes win then maybe we won't get any hurricanes down here this year. If I could convince myself of that, I'd cheer on the 'Canes too!
Although, thinking on it, maybe there is something to it. The Tampa Bay Lightning won the Cup in 2004, and we had one of the worst hurricane seasons in memory. And last year was a doozy as well, while the Bolts were still defending champs because of the strike. So maybe if the Hurricanes win, all the storms will head north. (Not that I'd wish a hurricane on anyone...but I've had my lifetime supply, thankyouverymuch)
But then again, if the Oilers win, maybe the balance of nature will be restored. I doubt there are many hurricanes in Alberta.
On a somewhat related thread, my newly-minted 7-year-old came up with this gem last night:
Q. What do hockey players drink?
A. Skater-ade!

Dibs!
As soon as I got home from work, I looked at my kids, who were camped in front of the TV, and announced:
"I have dibs on the TV at 8."
With a chance for a hockey playoff series to be closed out, I was not going to miss it! And I was not disappointed - it was a great game!
Although I did miss the first goal....I'd started DD's bathwater, then got caught up watching the beginning of the game. By the time I remembered, the tub had overflowed a bit, and the Oilers scored while I was cleaning up. D'oh!
So now I have some tough decisions... Ducks or Oilers? Sabres or 'Canes?

He shoots, he SCOOOOOOORES!
Yesterday, an old friend of mine came down from Minnesota on business, and we met him for dinner. It's always good to see old friends again, and I think he got on well with DH and the kids. We all had a good time. (Note to self: Get back up to Duluth sometime...)
He also clued me into a station that *is* airing the NHL games: OLN. So I checked my digital cable lineup, and I do indeed get OLN. And there was much rejoicing! So last night I caught the 3rd period of the Devils-Hurricanes game. Life is good. Thanks, D!
Of course, I only get it on the main TV with the digital box, which means I have to compete with DD wanting to watch digital kid channels, and DsS using it for his Xbox, but it at least lets me watch the games.
I may have to do some creative bargaining for TV time, though!
In less pleasant news, we're still under siege from brush fires. The smoke was so heavy this morning it was starting to seep in around my front door and I could smell it in my living room. And although I was only outside for all of two minutes this morning, I can smell it in my office. I think it's gotten into my hair! Absolutely nasty!
We're supposed to get some rain soon, but I'll believe it when I see it...

Escapism
So other than a less-than-positive weigh-in at Curves yesterday, last night was relaxing. I got to stitch for an hour, and watched playoff hockey. Well, I had my stitching out for well over an hour, but counting child-driven interrupts ("Mom, read me a story!") I only actually put needle in fabric for about an hour. And no frogs this time!
The Lightning game had an exciting ending. With Montreal up 3-2, Tampa scored with 17 seconds remaining to send it into OT. Free hockey! A minute in, a Tampa player shot, grabbed the rebound, and bounced it off the goalie's skate from behind to win. The Lightning now lead the series 3-0. Doubt it'll be a sweep, though it would be nice. I'd also like to see the Sharks sweep the Avalanche - that could be cool as well. However, I'd like the Flyers-Leafs series to go to 7 games. Game 7s are cool....and it would leave the series winner more tired than the Lightning (assuming, of course, that series doesn't also go to a game 7).
Ah, I love playoff hockey. And not just because of playoff beards!
So I'm 22 days away from our big overseas trip, and I've already started thinking about what to pack, how to protect our valuables, and the like. I am very much looking forward to this trip. And don't worry, dear readers. You will hear all about it when I return. It should keep me in blog entries for quite a while.

Less work, more hockey!
This weekend was rather more relaxing than the last, which is probably just as well for my sanity! I stitched a few hours on Last Supper, took DD to an indoor playground on Saturday, and generally just sat around stitching and watching hockey. The Tampa Bay Lightning closed out their series and are moving on (GO BOLTS!!)
I've only been a hockey fan since about '95, when a Canadian friend clued me into it. I was interested, and became well and truly hooked the next year when the Florida Panthers went to the Stanley Cup Finals. Unfortunately they were swept by the Colorado Avalanche, but still, it was an impressive run, and certainly enough to light a fire in me for the ice. The past few years, the Panthers haven't been doing so well, but the Lightning have. And where I live, there's not really a local team, but the Lightning are more likely to be televised. Maybe over time I'll develop a more lasting loyalty to one or the other, though I suspect strong loyalties generally develop during childhood.
So I don't really have a single favorite team, though there are teams I will cheer for, and certainly those I will cheer against. The Dallas Stars fall into this latter category, though I do admire some of their players. I don't know, I just can't find it in myself to cheer for any team from Dallas. Comes from growing up a Redskins fan, I guess - disliking Dallas is written in my marrow.
Interesting that all 5 of the Canadian teams who went to the playoffs are involved in Game 7s over the past few days. I love Game 7 hockey. Very intense, both teams drawing on their inner reserves to advance, knowing that a loss means they go home. I'm looking forward to it, and I suspect I won't get much stitching done tonight

I went in the hospital to have DD during the Conference Finals one year, and had the doc wait until after the Sabres-Leafs game was over before I let her break my water. (DD would be 6 weeks premature, so an extra hour in utero would be good for her anyway).
I still maintain DD was early because she didn't want to miss the Finals.
